Greetings from the DOJO! This week the Treadmill Sensei feels very very old. Not only did my eldest daughter just get married, but a rather significant day has passed. On Oct 19th, the Treadmill Sensei celebrated his 21st year in the fitness industry. That's right, your Sensei has been servicing, installing, rebuilding and repairing treadmills, ellipticals and fitness equipment for 21 years now! Dear lord I'm old! I think I need to build myself a fitness walker!

Speaking of my daughter, her new husband asked me to take a look at the treadmill he has out in his garage. He said it has been acting a little "funny" and was wondering if there were anything I could do to fix it. Heading out to his garage, I found an almost brand new New Balance 1200 Treadmill. The thing was in great shape and looked as if it had just been sitting off to the side unused. Looking under the treadmill I quickly figured out his problem: no treadmill mat in a very dusty/dirty area. That was it. His motor had become clogged with dust and link and was no longer running at full efficiency. I popped the hood off the New Balance 1200 treadmill's motor, did a quick clean job on the motor, and had it up and running in about an hour. One of the key things about treadmills is to have a treadmill mat under them. The motors act like giant dust/dirt magnets and you can ruin your motor if you're not careful. The mat will helps to discharge the static build-up. Another thing I told my new son-in-law is to keep his treadmill belt lubricated and adjusted. Two very easy things to do once you know how to do them.

Since I had worked on his New Balance 1200, I thought I'd do a review of this excellent machine. If you are a regular reader on this website then you've probably already seen the high rating I gave the New Balance 1200 in my top 5 treadmills of 2006 posting. Nothing has changed since that Top 5 List.

The New Balance 1200 is an excellent choice for runners looking for a solid performing treadmill at around $1000. The unit is heavy duty, sturdy and has one of the largest decks available for a treadmill in this price range. The 20x56 deck should be more than enough for all but the hardest of marathon training.

The deck itself could be a tiny bit thicker, but at 3/4" it will still hold up to your running workouts and their "Dura-Soft" shock absorption system is comfortable and gives you solid support and cushioning. In the same area, the rollers on the New Balance 1200 are a large 2.4" and will help extend the life of your belt and motor both. Speaking of the motor, New Balance gives you a large, low RPM 2.0 horsepower motor that will last for the life time of the treadmill itself (as long as you aren't like my son-in-law and keep the thing clean and well cared for!).

The "grip" monitors on the treadmills/ellipipticals are a joke. Taking it manually is a pain in the ass.

Looking for something cheap and effective.

I'd rather not have to tie something around my chest if I don't have to. (I would think that the back of a watch or the watch band could have the sensor on itself, as the wrist is a fairly sensitive place to pick up a heart rate, no? But all the HR monitors I am checking out come with the wireless chest strap!)

Any suggestions?

Tanita Heart Rate Monitor More of a pulse meter than a heart rate monitor. I originally bought this pulse meter to try and measure my morning resting heart rate. It hasn??™t been very useful for that though. When I wake up, I am still have asleep, and can??™t focus my eyes. Then I need to turn the light on, and find the unit. After all of that moving around, my pulse has usually risen anyway.
Where I find it useful is when I am sitting around at work, or at home. I can pull the unit out of my pocket, and get my pulse. It is good for biofeedback. I can watch my pulse, and try to force myself to relax, and get my pulse lower.
The Tanita cardio heart rate monitor measures your pulse by measuring the light changes going through your finger. As your your hear pulses, blood is forced and into your finger, and less light comes through. Sometimes, it is tricky getting your finger in the right position. Because the unit it is looking for changes in light, it needs a consistent light source. So this unit does not work while you are moving around. Don??™t even think about using it while you are running or walking. It just wont work. For that, you will better off buying a real heart rate monitor with a chest strap.
Since I bought the Tanita cardio heart rate monitor as a pulse meter, it has one behaviour that is really annoying. You press ???PULSE???, and then put your finger on the sensor. It will read, and display your pulse for one minute, then switch back to displaying the time. I didn??™t buy this as a clock! I don??™t want it to keep switching back to displaying time! Anyway, if you just want something to see your resting heart rate, while you are sitting around, and don??™t want to go through the hassle counting beats, while watching a clock, then you might like this unit. The price is good.

Lame attempt at a pun, I know. Bear with me.

Anyway, I followed my RD's advice and tried HIIT (high intensity interval training) for the first time last night. I incorporated it into my normal 2.5 mile nightly walk. The RD told me I should only do this type of activity for 20 minutes, tops, no more than three times a week.

Five words: put a fork in me.

I strapped on my heart rate monitor and started walking at my normal brisk pace for about four minutes, getting my heart rate up to about 134 bpm. Then I took off in a dead sprint (and I DO mean sprint--I ran as fast and as hard as I could, my feet nearly hitting my ass, running as though someone waving an ax were chasing me) for about 30 seconds, measuring my heart rate until it hit about 175 bpm. Then I stopped, not completely, just down to almost a crawl.

That wasn't so bad, I thought to myself. Shoot, I could do this all night.

Hah! As if. I felt great, exhilarated even, after the first two sprint intervals. OK, truth be told, I felt triumphantly smug. You see, I've done some reading on HIIT, and all articles have indicated that one should experience extreme exhaustion following each session, perhaps even nausea or (in severe cases) actual vomiting. But I felt full of vim and vigor!

Until the fourth interval, that is. I ran as hard during that interval as I did back in my track days (which were loooong ago). When I stopped to allow my heart rate to slow down, wooziness hit me mercilessly. It was 10 p.m., my neighborhood was quiet and dark, and I was about a mile from my house. My stomach started hitching as though I would throw up. My legs turned wobbly and I staggered down the street like the town drunk. But what really got to me was the lightheadedness. Several panic-stricken minutes passed during which I swore I would pass out right there in the middle of the street, with no one around to help me. I envisioned myself collapsing across the top of a garbage can (it was trash day today) and being discovered at sunrise by an unsuspecting homeowner.

But I didn't collapse. Instead, I slowed my pace further, taking little mincing steps until my heart rate returned to 134 bpm. I finished my twenty minutes with a fifth interval, willing myself to push through the fear. Then I resumed my normal pace for the remainder of my walk.

I like this. And all research points to the high efficacy of HIIT. We shall see...
